  3. ┬Ñ Utilized Pratt & Whitney R-2800-18W Double Wasp 18 cylinder two row radial engine of 2100 hp.
  4. ┬Ñ Large engine necessitated the largest prop, 13 ft. 2 in., of any contemporary fighter.
  5. ┬Ñ Large prop necessitated famous gull wing to keep landing gear from being overly long.
  6. ┬Ñ Distinctive engine noise and high kill ratio quickly earned the F4U the nickname ├öWhistling Death├ò from the Japanese.

  10. ┬Ñ Built by North American with British Purchasing Commission specifications of requirement of inline engine, eight guns and superior performance to the Curtiss P-40.

  12. ┬Ñ Utilizing drop tanks the Mustang could fly round trip between the United Kingdom and Berlin.
  13. ┬Ñ Famous Army Air Corp pilot Colonel Charles ├öChuck├ò Yeager  shot down five enemy fighters in his Mustang, ├öGlamorous Glennis├ò.
  14. ┬Ñ A modified Mustang flown by Bill ├öTiger├ò Destefani has  recently dominated the Reno Air Races and has been clocked at over 500 mph on the course.

  16. B-17 Flying Fortress
  17. ┬Ñ Built by Boeing in Seattle, Washington; the company that during our peaceful 1990├òs builds the B-737, B-747, B-757, B-767 and B-777.
  18. ┬Ñ With a gross weight of 55,000 lbs. the bomber was powered by four 1,200 hp Wright R-1820-97 Cyclone nine cylinder radial engines with 11 ft 7 in props.
  19. ┬Ñ Heavily armored with up to thirteen 0.50 inch Browning machine-guns with two each in the forward dorsal, ventral and rear turrets and one each in the nose, beam and rear dorsal positions and up to 12,500 lbs. bombs.
  20. ┬Ñ Despite heavy armament fighter escorts during daylight bombing raids were necessary to prevent heavy losses.

  23. B-25 Mitchell
  24. ┬Ñ Built by North American utilizing specifications by the US Army for a twin engine, medium range bomber.
  25. ┬Ñ With a gross weight of 33,500 lbs. the bomber was powered by two 1,850 hp Wright R-2600-29 Cyclone fourteen cylinder radial engines with 12 ft 6 in props.
  26. ┬Ñ Utilized by the United States,  Britain and other allie forces and surprisingly, Russia.
  27. ┬Ñ Armament included up to thirteen Colt-Browning machine guns and 4,000 lbs. of bombs. 
  28. ┬Ñ In the famous ├öDoolittle Raid├ò sixteen B-25 Mitchell bombers launched off the carrier USS Hornet to become the first aircraft to strike the Japanese mainland thus boosting American morale by proving the Japanese were reachable and not invincible.

  30. Douglas SBN Dauntless Dive Bomber 
  31. ┬Ñ The premier UnitedStates dive bomber in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Built by Douglas Aircraft it was powered by a 1200 hp Wright Cyclone nine cylinder radial engine turning a 10 ft. 6 in. three blade prop. Max speed was 225 mph and max range was 1,115 miles.
  32. ┬Ñ Had a crew of two; one pilot and a gunner in the rear of the cockpit who operated two .50 in. machine guns. 
  33. ┬Ñ Involved in two of the most famous naval aircraft battles of World War II; the Battle of the Coral Sea, registering 40 aircraft kills and the Battle of Midway, sinking 3 Japanese aircraft carriers and severely damaging another.

  35. Heinkel He 111 
  36. ┬Ñ A mainstay of the early Germanoffensives and was arguably the best of the Luftwaffe's first generation of monoplane bombers. The effectiveness of the Heinkel He 111 was reduced by a lack of sufficient fighter cover.
  37. ┬Ñ Powered by two 1200 hp Junkers Jumo 211-D-1 engines powering three blade props. Max speed was 258 mph and max range with a full bomb load was 760 miles.

  39. Junkers Ju 87 ├ÆStuka├ô 
  40. ┬Ñ Probably the most famous bomber utilized by the Germans in World War II. The Stuka saw early action in attacks on Poland, France and the low countries. It was quite effective but by the end of the war was becoming obsolete.
  41. ┬Ñ Powerred by a 1200 hp Junkers Jumo 211-Da engine driving a three bladed prop. Armament included a 7.9mm machine gun in each wing and one in the rear of the cockpit and one 1,102 lb bomb under the fuselage or four 110 lb bombs under the wings and one 551 lb bomb under the fuselage.
